Turning 26: how to plan your next health insurance coverage

If you are turning 26, begin with your current plan's end date rather than assuming coverage stops on your birthday. The timing can differ between a parent's employer plan and a Marketplace plan. Getting that answer in writing gives you a useful starting point for comparing your own coverage.

Confirm when the current policy ends

HealthCare.gov says dependent coverage under a parent's job-based plan generally lasts until age 26, with details determined by the plan and applicable state rules. A parent's Marketplace plan can generally cover you through December 31 of the year you turn 26, or a later age permitted by the state. Ask the employer or insurer which rule applies to your policy.

Compare the options available to you

Check any benefits offered through your own employer and consider individual coverage. Losing eligibility for a parent's qualifying coverage may create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period. The application, deadline, and required evidence depend on the situation; turning 26 is a reason to check eligibility, not a reason to wait until after coverage ends.

Prepare a simple transition file

Keep the current insurer's end-date notice, any employer benefits information, your ZIP code, and your desired start date together. Note the doctors and prescriptions you want checked during a private consultation. If someone expects to claim you as a tax dependent, explain that when discussing a Marketplace application.

Compare more than the monthly bill

This may be the first time you choose a plan yourself. Ask how a deductible works, which visits have copays, where you can receive care, and how prescriptions are handled. Ask the broker to demonstrate the insurer's provider directory and member services contact process so you can use the coverage after enrollment.

Keep the dates connected

Write down the old plan's last covered day and the new plan's confirmed first day. Then record any first payment deadline and pending documents. A saved quote or booked consultation does not complete enrollment. Follow the insurer's activation instructions and keep the confirmation.

Request individual coverage guidance from HHG. Tell us you are leaving a parent's plan and when it ends; an independent broker can discuss options in your state. Availability and eligibility must be confirmed.
