How to buy individual health insurance without employer coverage

Buying your own health insurance starts with three questions: when do you need it, which coverage can you enroll in, and what would you pay when you use it? This guide is for someone shopping for themselves because a job does not provide coverage, or because they are moving to an individual plan.
Start with the enrollment window
Check your eligibility to enroll before comparing monthly prices. Marketplace coverage generally requires Open Enrollment or a qualifying Special Enrollment Period. A request for information does not create an enrollment opportunity. If existing coverage is ending, keep the notice showing its last day and tell your broker the date you need replacement coverage.
Compare the Marketplace with off-exchange coverage
The ACA Marketplace offers individual plans and determines eligibility for financial assistance. Buying directly from an insurer or through a broker outside the Marketplace does not provide Marketplace premium tax credits. Before accepting an off-exchange quote, ask whether it is ACA-compliant major medical insurance or a different product.
The word “private” alone does not settle that question. Ask for the policy type and written benefit documents. Do not assume that a low premium, a familiar network logo, or a list of office visit benefits means two policies provide the same protection.
Build a comparison you can actually use
For each option, write down the full plan name, premium, deductible, out-of-pocket limit, network, prescription rules, and proposed effective date. Then ask the broker to walk through the same situations: a routine doctor visit, a specialist visit, and an unexpected hospital stay. Get the explanation tied to the policy documents rather than a general description of the carrier.
If you have a doctor you want to keep, verify that provider against the exact plan. Keep your medication list ready for a private conversation. You do not need to put medical details into a public website form to start a request.
Before you end an existing plan
Confirm the new enrollment, first payment instructions, and effective date before canceling existing coverage. Keep your application confirmation and insurer contact details together. A quote or consultation booking is not proof that a policy is active.
Request individual coverage guidance from HHG. We connect people with independent brokers for phone or virtual consultations in the states we serve. Plan availability, eligibility, and pricing must be confirmed.
