2027 Open Enrollment: dates, deadlines and when coverage starts

Use the current federal Marketplace calendar, understand the January 1 deadline and avoid mixing ACA and Medicare enrollment dates.
The current federal Marketplace dates
As checked October 13, 2026, HealthCare.gov says the enrollment window for 2027 coverage begins November 1, 2026 and ends January 15, 2027. To start coverage January 1, select a plan by December 15 and meet the insurer’s first-premium requirements. Selections from December 16 through January 15 generally begin February 1. Check your state Marketplace if it operates its own enrollment platform. HealthCare.gov — Marketplace dates and deadlines.
Why you may have seen December 15 listed as the final day
A 2025 rule announced a shorter 2027 enrollment season. CMS’s updated enrollment manual says a June 12, 2026 court order struck certain provisions and that the federal enrollment dates were not changed. Its 2027 effective-date table retains January 1 and February 1 starts. This is why a dated government document or old social post should not be the only calendar you use. Work backward from the date you need coverage
If you need a January 1 start, set a personal comparison deadline earlier than December 15. Give yourself time to review an eligibility notice, answer a document request or resolve an application error. Saving a quote is not the same thing as selecting a plan. Put the selection confirmation and the insurer’s payment instructions together so the remaining steps are visible.
After you choose, finish enrollment
HealthCare.gov explains that the first premium is paid to the insurance company, not the Marketplace. The insurer’s due date matters. Confirm the payment and effective date, then check your enrollment record. If you are unsure whether coverage is active, contact the insurer rather than relying solely on the arrival of an ID card. Different programs use different windows
Medicare’s annual fall enrollment period is October 15 through December 7. It is a separate program with a separate calendar. Losing qualifying coverage or another eligible life event can also create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period outside the fall window. Do not assume that any life change qualifies; use the Marketplace’s rules for that event. Medicare.gov — Medicare Open Enrollment; HealthCare.gov — Special Enrollment Periods.
- October: prepare household information and compare renewal notices.
- November: review actual 2027 options when enrollment opens.
- Before your applicable deadline: select a plan and save the confirmation.
- By the insurer’s deadline: pay any first premium and confirm activation.
- After activation: verify provider access, prescriptions and account information.
When a deadline is close
Use the official Marketplace or insurer contact method and record your confirmation number. HHG can connect you with an independent broker for a phone or virtual discussion, but a consultation request is not an insurance application and does not reserve an enrollment deadline. If timing is urgent, say which coverage start date you need.
