Can you get health insurance outside Open Enrollment?

If you need health insurance after Open Enrollment, the first question is whether you qualify for another enrollment opportunity. Searching for a policy and being eligible to start it are separate steps. Begin with what changed and when it happened.

Check for a qualifying life change

HealthCare.gov lists situations that may create a Special Enrollment Period, including losing qualifying coverage, certain household changes, and qualifying moves. The rules vary by event. A divorce without a loss of insurance, for example, is not the same enrollment situation as a divorce that ends your coverage.

Do not assume a move, a job change, or an unpaid premium automatically qualifies. Explain the precise circumstances and use the Marketplace's official eligibility process.

Work from the event date and coverage end date

Many loss-of-coverage situations have a window before and after coverage ends, but some programs and circumstances have different deadlines. Ask which deadline applies to you and what evidence is required. Keep the notice of coverage loss, event documentation, and any application correspondence together.

Separate a plan search from an application

You can ask questions and compare options before an enrollment determination is complete. That does not reserve a start date. Record which steps remain: eligibility review, document submission, plan selection, payment, and activation. Ask who is responsible for each next step.

Be careful with “available year-round” claims

Some products sold outside the Marketplace are available on a different basis. Ask exactly what the policy is, whether it is comprehensive major medical coverage, and what it excludes. Availability alone does not mean a policy meets the same need as the plan you lost. Marketplace financial assistance does not apply to coverage purchased outside the Marketplace.

What if no Special Enrollment Period applies?

Ask the official Marketplace about your next enrollment opportunity. Medicaid and CHIP applications are available throughout the year, with eligibility determined through the applicable program. HHG does not enroll people in every type of public benefit; use the appropriate official agency for those programs.

If a deadline is close, use the official application or assistance channel directly. A website consultation request is not an insurance application and does not extend a deadline.

Request HHG guidance about your coverage options. Tell us your state, the coverage end date, and the change that prompted your search. Independent brokers can discuss available options; eligibility and start dates must be confirmed.
