2027 Marketplace subsidies: income, eligibility and the limits of a quote

Understand the difference between a premium tax credit, cost-sharing reductions and a preliminary estimate before you choose coverage.
Assistance is based on your application
The premium tax credit helps eligible households pay for Marketplace insurance. Eligibility is more than a single income number: tax household, access to other qualifying coverage and other rules matter. The IRS explains that advance payments are estimates that must be reconciled with the final credit on your tax return. Use an application decision, not an advertisement, to determine your assistance. The enhanced-credit period has ended
IRS guidance for 2026 says households above 400% of the federal poverty line are no longer eligible for the credit under the rules described there. Do not reuse a 2025 subsidy estimate for 2027. The prior enhanced assistance was temporary; a proposal to restore or change it is not the same as an enacted change. Verify current rules when you apply. IRS — Publication 505 (2026), premium tax credit changes.
Use the right year for the right number
For Marketplace savings, the prior year’s federal poverty guidelines are used for the next coverage year. That is different from estimating household income: your application uses the income you expect during the year of coverage. For example, a 2027 application estimates 2027 household income even though the poverty guideline reference comes from 2026. Alaska and Hawaii have different poverty guideline amounts. A specific 2027 eligibility change
HealthCare.gov states that, starting January 1, 2027, savings eligibility among noncitizens is limited to lawful permanent residents, Cuban or Haitian entrants, and Compact of Free Association migrants. Other immigration statuses may still qualify to buy Marketplace coverage without savings. This is a distinction between buying coverage and receiving financial assistance; seek a current official determination for the household rather than assuming everyone is treated alike. Do not mix premium help with help when you use care
A premium tax credit reduces the monthly coverage price. Cost-sharing reductions change deductibles, copayments and coinsurance for eligible people enrolled in a Silver plan. If you qualify for the second type of help, compare the actual Silver option before choosing a different metal category because its premium looks lower. Prepare a clear household worksheet
List everyone in the tax household, who needs insurance, expected income sources and any offer of employer coverage. Write down what is uncertain: a contract renewal, a marriage, a dependent’s status or a possible new job. Bring the uncertainty into the discussion instead of forcing a guess into a simple online estimate. You do not need to share private immigration, identity or tax documents in a general website inquiry.
- Ask which coverage year a calculator is using.
- Ask whether the figure shown is before or after assistance.
- Save the eligibility notice and any document deadline.
- Revisit the application when income or household circumstances change.
What an independent broker can help explain
A broker can help you compare the choices available through the appropriate enrollment channel and explain the application process. The Marketplace determines eligibility; HHG does not promise a subsidy or a zero-dollar plan. For tax filing questions, use a qualified tax professional alongside the official IRS guidance.
